Kitchen Design Programs
If you like to watch home design programs on HGTV or DIY; I know you have seen the virtual home design studios. I like the one on the Nate Berkus show. He just puts in dimensions of the room and adds and removes furniture and architectural details with the touch of a finger. If only it were that easy at home. Sometimes it’s hard to visualize what the final results of a remodel will be without actually seeing it. I can’t look at my old kitchen and picture what it will look like if I change it. I did a little research and lo and behold; there are kitchen design programs that you can download.
There is kitchen design software available. Some of that is free, but it may be just generalized information and not specific to a kitchen. Homestyler by Auto desk is one such free program. It is online so there is no download involved. It does give you the ability to choose brands, but there is no walk through ability and the designs are rudimentary. Google Sketchup is another free program, but it is not geared specifically to kitchens. You can go to their 3D Warehouse and work off the design someone else has created. They also have a Sketchup Pro program that currently sells for $495.00.
The paid kitchen design programs are more specific. AutoCAD Freestyle by Auto desk will cost from $79.00-$149.00, but it will allow you to render drawings that you can hand off to a contractor without being made fun of. There is a good sized section devoted to kitchens and this software bridges the gap between professional and consumer grade. The CAD software approaches professional-grade but is easy for the average consumer to use.
The Encore 3D Home Architect Design Suite runs about $35.00-$70.00. It is not very detailed but it’s easy to use and will help you block out the basic spaces.
A more ambitious program is Punch Software Home Design Studio Pro. The cost is around $250.00, but you will get professional-like kitchen design software, with all the associated strengths.
It’s a bit tougher to learn, but most people can master it in a weekend. 20-20 Technology has truly professional kitchen design software that produces sharp, gorgeous renderings. Unfortunately the price is out of reach for many homeowners because it is the same software used by professional kitchen designers.
If you just want a basic idea of how to place things in your kitchen; try one of the free or less expensive kitchen design programs. Even the mid-priced kitchen design software has a lot to offer the homeowner.
