Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Your kitchen cabinets provide the biggest visual impact in your overall kitchen design. It’s no wonder that people spend so much time agonizing over the choice of style, finishes, and hardware. Kitchen cupboards are basically the same inside, but it’s the kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts that give them their final look.

You can buy stock kitchen cabinets finished or unfinished at most home improvement stores. They are quite inexpensive and if you’re handy, you can stain or paint them to suit your taste. Custom kitchen cabinets are bit more expensive, but they come in a lot of styles and can be customized into a number of configurations. You might want a pull-out cutting boards or deep storage drawers. There are corner cabinets with lazy Susan options so that you won’t waste that space. My cabinets have pull out drawers where the larger dishes are stored and I love them. I don’t have to rummage around to reach things in the back of the cabinet. The lazy Susan in the corner unit makes finding things very simple as well.

The fastest way to update your kitchen is to change the cabinet doors and hardware. Kitchen cabinet doors can be painted or completely refaced in almost any color or wood finish. You may choose to replace all or some of your cabinet doors with glass fronts. Sometimes just the inside panel of an existing door can be removed and replaced with glass. The hardware on custom cabinets can also make a big impact on the overall look. I have a friend whose kitchen cabinets are metal. She lives in an older home and replacing the cabinets just isn’t in her budget, so she painted the cabinet doors and found some vintage hardware at a flea market to give the kitchen a fresh new look.

If you’re thinking of making a change in your kitchen cabinets, check out the online sources and local home improvement stores for ideas. Most of the salespeople are very knowledgeable and will help you choose the best option for your project. They often offer measuring guides so that you get the perfect fit the first time. Most cabinets come in stock sizes, but if you have an older home with odd sized cabinets; you may have to go for custom built kitchen cabinets. That was the case in our house. The existing cabinets were homemade and we had to take them out entirely and replace them with prebuilt units. If you are creative and just want to jazz up what you already have; try some chalkboard paint on some of the kitchen cabinet doors for an instant message board. You could also have sheet metal, copper, or punched tin cut to fit inside the panels. Whatever you do, it will improve the overall look of your kitchen.
