There are lots of reasons that kitchen remodeling is on the increase. It is one of the best ways to increase the resale value of your home.

I honestly think that the Food Network has made people think more about cooking at home. You’re a lot more likely to cook and enjoy it if your kitchen is convenient and modern. It doesn’t have to be as fancy as Paula Deen’s but I do agree that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Some of my favorite memories of my grandmother revolve around being in the kitchen. She never minded if we made a mess and even when we were young; she would sit us up to the counter and give us age appropriate chores. No doubt that’s where I got my love of cooking.

A kitchen remodel can be as simple as re-facing or replacing outdated cabinets and countertops. That project alone will make an outdated kitchen look like new. If you’re on a tight budget, you could try sanding and painting cabinets and replacing the hardware. Glass front cabinets are very popular and I think they look beautiful provided everything inside is neat. If you have cabinets with a recessed panel, you can remove it and have glass cut to fit. I love the look but it would never work for me. The insides of my cabinets are far from neat. You can just replace the doors on your cabinets as well for a different look.

If replacing appliances is a part of your kitchen remodeling plan; stick with white or stainless steel appliances. Nothing looks more dated than appliances in harvest gold or avocado. Yes, they were once popular colors, but now they just scream 1970’s. Appliances are a big investment and they last a long time so keeping them neutral will allow them to work no matter what else you change in the kitchen.

A change in flooring is a good idea when remodeling a kitchen. You want something durable and easy to keep clean. Does anyone else remember when indoor outdoor carpet was popular? Carpet in a kitchen is insanity. I could be the world’s messiest cook and having carpeting would be a disaster. For some reason it also seems to be slightly unsanitary as well. Wood floors can be beautiful in the kitchen. Quarry stone tiles and even concrete are very durable and concrete can be stained and sealed. The new vinyl floors have come a long way from the older linoleum and they come in lots of patterns and colors.

If you are doing a huge kitchen remodel, hire a contractor and work with him on planning the perfect space for you. There are many businesses that do nothing but kitchen remodeling. Check out your local home stores as well for ideas that might work well in your home. Head out to a kitchen showroom and get inspired.
